How to Use a Sander?

Start by choosing the right type of sander from the sander company. Attach the correct grit of sandpaper and make sure the sander is unplugged or turned off while attaching the pad.

Before sanding, clean the surface to remove dust or debris. Hold the sander firmly with both hands, turn it on, and let it reach full speed. Then gently place it on the surface; let the tool’s weight and motion do the work.

Move the sander in even, overlapping passes along the grain of the material, especially with wood. Keep the sander moving constantly to avoid creating low spots or burn marks. For best results, start with a coarse grit, then move to finer grits for a smoother finish. Once finished, turn off the sander and wait for it to stop completely before setting it down.


Rotary Sander vs Palm Sander

A rotary sander uses a spinning motion where the sanding disc rotates in a circular pattern. It’s more powerful and aggressive, making it ideal for heavy-duty material removal on wood, metal, and paint. However, because it doesn’t move in a random orbit, it can leave swirl marks on delicate surfaces if not used carefully. 

On the other hand, a palm sander is a lighter, less aggressive tool designed for fine sanding and finishing. It vibrates in small orbits and is easy to control with one hand, making it great for smoothing wood, sanding corners, or prepping surfaces for paint. While not as powerful as a rotary sander, it’s much less likely to damage your material.
