Types of Pliers: How to Choose the Right Tool for Your Intensity?

Table of Content [Hide]

Pliers are an indispensable hand tool in home repairs, professional construction, and electrical work.

Yet, when selecting a pair, many people think that as long as it grips, it will do the job. Using the wrong tool for the job leads to poor efficiency at best and, at worst, results in damaged materials or serious safety hazards.

The level of work determines the grade of pliers you need. Learning how to choose the right pliers starts with matching the tool to the task.

Taking Deli Tools' product line as an example, this article explores different types of pliers and their uses, helping users choose the right tool for different working environments.

    How Pliers Work

Before comparing different types of pliers, it is worth understanding the basic construction of pliers.

Every pair consists of three core elements: the handles (effort point), the pivot (fulcrum), and the jaws (working point).

The operating principle is based on the lever principle: force applied by the hands to the handles is amplified through the pivot and transferred to the jaws for gripping, bending, twisting, or cutting.

The body of pliers is typically made of high-carbon steel or stainless steel, showing excellent strength and corrosion resistance. The handles are commonly coated with rubber, silicone, or plastic to offer both a non-slip grip and electrical insulation.

Three Pliers Grades of Deli Tool

Grade 1: Home / DIY Grade

Designed for homeowners and casual DIY users, home-grade pliers prioritize ease of use, safety, and a compact form factor. Typical applications include tightening loose wires, adjusting small household pipes, assembling furniture, and performing basic electrical tasks such as replacing sockets.

Deli's Home Series centers on the Universal Pliers, one of the most versatile plier tool types for everyday household maintenance and light repair work.

The jaws feature integrated blades for cutting hard and semi-hard materials, a curved center section with coarse teeth for holding pipes and round workpieces, and a fine-toothed tip for precision gripping without damaging the surface of the object.

Its ergonomic design decreases hand strain, making it an ideal choice for everyday household maintenance.

    Grade 2: Deli Yellow Series

This grade serves tradespeople, renovation contractors, and advanced DIYers who work with tools regularly, often several hours at a stretch, and need durability and functional variety to match.

    (1) The Yellow Series Universal Pliers line covers three core tools — a Combination Plier for gripping and cutting, a Long Nose Plier for precision work in confined spaces, and a Diagonal Cutting Plier for clean wire cuts.

    (2) Pipe Wrenches are engineered specifically for pipe gripping, delivering the high rotational torque needed for plumbing installations and repairs. The adjustable jaw accommodates different pipe diameters with a secure, non-slip bite.

For instance, the EDL105018 Aluminum Alloy Pipe Wrench features a head made of Chrome-Molybdenum (Cr-Mo) steel, and its body is 25% lighter than that of ordinary pipe wrenches.

    (3) Circlip Pliers (also known as snap ring pliers) are purpose-built for installing and removing internal or external retaining rings — a task that appears constantly in automotive and mechanical maintenance.

Attempting this with general-purpose pliers risks damaging the ring or the component. (This same model is also included in the Red Series.)

    (4) Locking Pliers can be set to a fixed jaw width and locked onto a workpiece, holding it firmly without continuous hand pressure. This frees the user to apply force elsewhere, making them invaluable during welding, assembly, and fastening work.

    Grade 3: Deli Red Series

Our Deli Red Series is built for industrial and trade-level work, featuring 3 purpose-built tools.

    (1) Pump Wrenches are available in 8", 10", and 12" lengths. Each features a multi-position adjustable jaw with a polished, non-slip surface and a dual-material handle for comfort and control under high torque. A single wrench can accommodate multiple workpiece sizes.

    (2) With a 5mm bar thickness, 2,000N maximum clamping force, and 12mm thread diagonal, the Heavy Duty F Clamps deliver pressure levels that standard clamps cannot safely achieve.

    Maintaining Your Pliers

Even professional-grade plier tool types require regular maintenance to ensure long-term durability and safe operation. A few consistent habits make a significant difference:

    • Never exceed the tool's rated load. Using pipe extensions to increase leverage places excessive force on the jaws and pivot, often leading to warping or cracking

    • Clean the jaws after each use to remove metal filings, grime, and moisture that accelerate corrosion.

    • Apply a drop of machine oil to the pivot point regularly to keep the action smooth and prevent seizing.

    • Inspect insulated handles before every use. Any crack or peel in the insulation means the tool must be retired immediately.

Choose the Right Grade for You

Two buying mistakes are equally common: overspending on professional tools for occasional home use, and underspending on household tools for professional applications.

The right plier for the job isn't necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. It's the one matched to your actual work intensity. Deli Tools' three-tier product structure — the Home Series for everyday tasks, the Yellow Series for trade-level work, and the Red Series for professional industrial applications — maps closely onto how real-world work demands vary across users.

Know your work. Know your grade. The rest is straightforward.
